Rolf Dieter Brinkmann
Regarding the major collaboration between Rolf Dieter Brinkmann and Ralf-Rainer Rygulla on the book »Frank Xerox's wilder Traum – und andere Kollaborationen« (»Frank Xerox's Wild Dream—and other collaborations«), here is a brief biography of Brinkmann:
Rolf Dieter Brinkmann (right in the photo) was born on 16 April 1940 in Vechta; He died on 23 April 1975 in London in a traffic accident. His anthology »ACID«, compiled together with Ralf-Rainer Rygulla (left), is legendary, providing a selection and overview of young American literature for the first time in 1969. He was himself a poet and writer, as well as an editor and translator of various works.
The Rolf Dieter Brinkmann Scholarship is named after him, which he, having lived and worked in precarious circumstances for most of his short life, would certainly have liked to have benefited from himself. In 2025, he would have celebrated his 85th birthday, were it not also the 50th anniversary of his death.
He is being honoured, among other things, with a new edition of his poems in the volume »Westwärts 1 + 2« by his colleagues at Rowohlt Verlag and the great Brinkmann biography by Michael Töteberg, also published by Rowohlt – we are delighted to be able to celebrate him with »Frank Xerox's wilder Traum«.

From autumn 1969 to autumn 1970, Ralf-Rainer Rygulla and Rolf Dieter Brinkmann, whose legendary beatnik anthology ACID had just been published, had a completely different collaboration: instead of collecting texts and images by (American) authors and artists together, they wrote new texts themselves.
In doing so, they pursued the approach of dissolving the classic, mostly glorified "authorship" and communitising the texts that were created and collaged together: they understood the texts that developed through exchange and mutual stimulation as a new literary genre, quasi without an author.
»Frank Xerox's wild dream« is a homage to the underlying idea of copying from language, of collaging existing language material - just 10 years earlier, in 1959, Xerox had delivered the first large copier, which is also commemorated here.
Our volume traces the work on the book planned at the time. Due to other work by both of them, but also due to the early death of Rolf Dieter Brinkmann and the insolvency of MÄRZ Verlag at the time, the book was not published. - The surviving central text pieces, recently preserved as Ralf-Rainer Rygulla's estate in the Marbach Literature Archive, are supplemented by correspondence and montage plans, scribbles and editorial notes, but also by third parties' comments on the project and the literary aesthetic it envisaged, as well as by numerous illustrations for Frank Xerox.
A similar aesthetic adventure to "Der Ganze Riemen" as a collaboration between Josef Beuys, who makes his appearance in Frank Xerox, and Johannes Stüttgen can be read and followed in our volume.
